Radiology is so important for chest physicians – every patient requires a chest x-ray, as we can learn so much from this simple investigation. Interpretation of the CXR is not simple – most radiologists will tell you that interpreting the CXR is the most difficult skill to master. But there are ways of approaching the CXR that help minimise the mistakes, and maximise the chance of making a useful interpretation.

Learning Objectives

Understand how X-Rays are generated, and captured on “film”
Understand the 4 densities observed on a CXR
Appreciate the importance of what forms an “adequate film”
Understand the silhouette sign, and it’s importance in CXR interpretation
Begin to differentiate normal from abnormal CXRs
Gain some understanding of 3 dimensional imaging of the thorax (CT), nuclear medicine techniques, and PET scanning.
